Work Week in Virginia

Sunday, November 4 - On to Hampton
Today we awoke very early due to the end of Daylight Savings Time and motored out into the bay for a 45 mile trip to Hampton, VA. The weather was cold and overcast but the winds were only 10 kts from the north. We motor sailed along with Serenity and a few other boats all headed in the same direction... South. Still wearing too many layers, including wool hats, socks and gloves. Will it ever get warm??

Heading out of Fishing Bay toward Hampton, VA

Jeff remembers Thimble Shoal Light from his Navy submarine days aboard the USS Requin (SS-481). Thimble Shoal Light is just north of the Hampton Roads channel. It was first built in 1872 and it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Scuttlebutt says it is now owned by a private individual and used as a residence!

Saturday, November 3 - Splicing Day in Fishing Bay
The weather report called for more of the same winds as yesterday so we decided to take a lay day in Fishing Bay to work on a few projects. We had bought 150 ft of 12-strand, braided anchor rode in Annapolis but hadn't yet had the courage to attempt splicing it onto the anchor chain.  This project occupied much of the day, but we were quite proud of our accomplishment. We celebrated our achievement with Bombay Sapphire, of course!

Arriving in Fishing Bay at Deltaville, VA the evening before. Nice to see such a calm anchorage after the wild ride down to it.

The secret to splicing this rode is keeping track of all the pieces. We ended up labeling each strand and where it needed to go. Once we got the first tucks correct it was downwind from there.
The proud parents of the finished product! Yipi Ki A!
Thanks to our Serenity buddies for snapping this beautiful late afternoon shot in Fishing Bay.

We reciprocated a little later when the light turned golden.
Pretty sunset later of our neighbors that evening
