Reaching Down the Chesapeake

Friday, November 2, 2012 - Solomon's MD to Deltaville VA
Weighed anchor at 0800 with Serenity to sail about 60 miles south to Deltaville VA. Weather reports called for westerly winds 15-20 building to 20-25 later in the afternoon with Small Craft Advisories in effect for the waters we were to travel. They were spot on! Right after exiting the Patuxent River the winds built to 12 kts off our starboard beam where they remained for the rest of the day. Of course, true to the forecast, they built consistently to 25 kts off of the mouth of the Potomac River, producing large beam seas and a darned uncomfortable ride. (Neala would definitely choose different adjectives to describe the ride. We will leave her descriptive adjectives to your imagination.) Oh, and by the way, it was freezing out there. It was yet another day of triple layers, gloves and ski hats. We finally anchored in Fishing Bay, a quiet, picturesque cove off of Deltaville, VA after 1600.

Neala took this out the salon window today before it got really crazy.

Off the bow, looking through the dodger window.

Safe and sound in calm and picturesque Fishing Cove, while enjoying our Bombay Sapphire cocktails.

Thursday, November 1, 2012 - Annapolis to Solomon's Island
We planned to make the 8am bridge over 6th Street but failed to notice the date: After the first of November the bridge no longer opens during rush hours so we had to wait until 9am. Fortunately, we and Serenity had to loiter for an hour, so Shirl got a chance to take an amazing shot of Northern Lights with a rainbow. Beautiful! Leaving Annapolis, we soon picked up a nice 10-15 kt westerly that maintained throughout the day. We had an excellent sail to Solomon's where we initiated our new Manson anchor in a quiet little cove (and learned to splice 12-strand Mega Plait anchor rode).

Thanks, Shirl, for the beautiful photo
Finally making the 9 o'clock bridge
 Container traffic on the Chesapeake
Crab fishermen abound in these waters, as do their numerous crab pots that we painstakingly avoided
LNG Gas Docks - a restricted zone - at Cove Point north of Solomon's
Flying our new whisker pole for the first time. Sweet!
